Hi, I am wanting to reinstall WindowsXP on my new Dimension 8400. However, I noticed that in order to do so, Windows needs the raid drivers to see my SATA Hard Drives.

This document describes installing native Serial ATA (SATA) drives on a computer that is using Windows Vista. Computers built for Windows XP use native-ATI technology to control hard drives, while Windows Vista uses native-Serial ATA (SATA) technology.

Most new BIOS' support usb floppy as the primary floppy so as far as windows knows, its got a floppy drive just like normal. XP came out in 2002, flash drives were just starting to come out, it was standard procedure to use floppies, I suppose they could have added support with SP2, but I dont think they made any changes at all to the 16bit installation process.

Do you ever wondered how to install Windows XP on SATA without a floppy drive? These days I have met a new challenge regarding the Windows OS install. I have a five years old Compaq 6820s laptop which, like any laptop that respects itself, ships with a Intel ICH8M chipset (i.e. with a Intel 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller.

Windows XP install CD never gained the ability to install directly onto this SATA, AHCI and RAID enabled storage controllers. Here are 2 ways to integrate the SATA drivers into your Windows XP CD allowing installation without the need of a floppy drive.

Unable to install the AHCI or RAID driver using the F6 installation procedure because the system does not have a floppy drive. Use one of these methods to resolve the issue: Attach a USB floppy drive. You might need to enter the system BIOS and set the USB emulation mode to floppy.

For example, if you need to install Windows XP (because it's an old hardware uncapable of running something better), and you need to install operating system to the SATA HDD in AHCI mode or to the RAID controller (with appropriate F6 floppy drivers), but you have neither CD/DVD nor floppy drive available, just USB ports.

2. make a simple bios change and you do not need those drivers. Enter the bios and go to the Drives section and change the Sata Operation to RAID Autodetect/ATA, save changes on exit, now XP will see the drives. There is no workaround for F6 option during XP install, it must be a floppy drive.
